Pricing access to Internet service providers
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper studies the efficient pricing of termination services for calls that are made to Internet service providers (ISPs). A model is presented in which an incumbent phone network is obligated to provide local calls at a regulated per-minute price while entrant carriers compete to terminate ISP-bound calls. This model is used to understand the problems of regulatory arbitrage that arise when termination charges for ISP-bound calls are not regulated or set reciprocally. Different solutions to the pricing of terminating ISP-bound calls are evaluated. 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. JEL classification: L50; L96

A Proposal for a Flexible Service Plan that is Attractive to Users and Internet Service Providers
The current Internet Service Provider market does not offer different types of service plans for Internet access. The predominant pricing plan is a flat-rated plan. Since the number of new Internet users is still growing very fast, there is no real competition in the Internet market. Consequently, there is no incentive for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to focus on certain user groups by off...

متن کاملDynamic Pricing of Wireless Internet Based on Usage and Stochastically Changing Capacity
Inspired by new developments in dynamic spectrum access, we study the dynamic pricing of wireless internet access when demand and capacity (i.e., available bandwidth) are both stochastic. The demand for wireless internet access has increased enormously in recent years. However, the spectrum available to wireless service providers is limited. The industry has thus expanded conventional license-b...
متن کاملHow to charge for network services - flat-rate or usage-based?
Currently, the Internet service provider market offers two different types of pricing plans. In the USA, the predominant pricing plan is a flat-rate plan. In Europe and Asia, the predominant one is a per-minute pricing plan. Enrolled in such a pricing plan, users have to pay for the connect time to the Internet. Although Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have competed heavily for users in these...
متن کاملWeb Service Providers\' Game on Price and Service Level
Response time is one of the critical web service quality dimensions. It refers to how long it takes that a web service responds to request of a user. In order to manage the response time, pricing schemes can work as an efficient access control mechanism. In this paper, we study competition between two providers offering functionally same web services where there is a monopoly service provider...
متن کاملAbstract of Paper for the 29th Research Conference on Communication, Information and Internet Policy
One of the major areas for research and investment related to the Internet is the provision of quality of service (QoS). In this paper, study the equilibrium outcomes when two Internet Access Providers (IAPs) interact. These IAPs are assumed to be rural dialup providers (as data shows that duopolies often exist in such markets), using empirically based demand functions. To determine the equilib...
